Family Business Alliance Ambassadors are volunteers for FBA who are committed to helping members get the most out of their membership. They are all individuals who have been very involved with the organization and have used resources and programs to help strengthen their businesses and families. Ambassadors are available as a resource to our members for any questions they may have from a member’s perspective.
How did you first get involved in FBA?
My company has been part of the FBA since the beginning. Its founders were in a peer group with my father, Craig, through YPO so he helped support them in their new local venture. I was in a next-Gen YPO peer group when I lived in Chicago and really enjoyed the experience, so I sought out the FBA when I moved back to Grand Rapids.
Why is FBA important to you?
Working in the business as a family member is a unique experience. One that can often lead to a lack of understanding of how you’re treated or why your experience may be different than others. FBA gives you an opportunity to connect with individuals that share that experience and helps you develop the tools and skills that are uniquely needed to navigate within a family-run organization.
What has been your favorite FBA event or activity?
The best part of the FBA has been my peer group. I’ve developed some real friendships and always know I can call one of them to vent or listen when dealing with challenging issues. The golf outing is pretty fun too.
Why do you think family businesses are important to West Michigan?
The West Michigan community has one of the largest concentrations of family-run companies in the country. This helps shape our community and culture in ways that we can all see. Life here isn’t about the next job, next venture or opportunity, it’s about the future and about creating one that builds off the previous generations’ successes.
What are some of your favorite hobbies?
I grew up spending a lot of time on the ski hill, West Michigan’s waters, and playing golf. I was very fortunate to get to know some of West MI’s highlights at a young age. Today, I still enjoy these things, spending time with my Wife, Teresa, and our two golden retrievers. We also like to adventure-travel. Finding destinations with challenging activities like hiking, etc. When not enjoying life’s active side, I have a passion for cooking and like to put on a show in the kitchen
