Inside Jodi Berg’s journey of restoring alignment, rebuilding culture, and igniting a purpose-driven transformation
Posted Nov 13, 2025
The Family Business Alliance recently hosted its Signature Event, The Gravitational Pull of Purpose, bringing West Michigan family business leaders together at Frederik Meijer Gardens for an inspiring keynote from Jodi Berg, previous CEO and shareholder of Vitamix.

Drawing from Vitamix’s 100-year history, Jodi Berg shared how intentional leadership, cultural alignment, and a purpose-driven approach fueled the company’s rise from $5M to $500M in under 15 years.
When competing visions caused the third generation to “implode,” the family foundation was also shaken. The turnaround for the business and the family came from returning to Vitamix’s core purpose – helping people live healthier lives—and activating the personal purpose of family, employees, and customers, which proved far more powerful than strategy alone.
Key Takeaways for West Michigan Family Business Leaders
- Purpose is the Most Powerful Lever You Have
- A clear, higher purpose increases engagement across the organization.
- Employees with their own personal purpose are twice as engaged, regardless of job role.
- For family businesses, purpose can unify generations and stabilize growth.
- Your Problems Are Not Unique — and That’s Good News
- Governance conflict, sibling/cousin misalignment, unclear roles, and fairness dilemmas are universal.
- External advisors can help families see patterns they cannot see themselves.
- Accepting this truth reduces guilt and accelerates healthy decision-making.
- Emotional Connection is a Competitive Advantage
- Family businesses outperform because they care deeply; the work is personal.
- But emotional connection becomes a liability when not balanced with structure and clarity.
- Being “Fair” is Not the Same as Being Effective
- Vitamix’s third generation collapsed partly due to trying to include everyone equally.
- Family business should embrace and understand that roles, ownership, governance, and management require intentional design, not equality by default.
- Culture Enables Growth More than Strategy Alone
- Vitamix grew from a small regional brand to a global leader by activating culture—not by pushing product, but by amplifying purpose through employees and passionate customers.
- Crisis Often Precedes Breakthrough
- Many family businesses experience their greatest reinvention after disruption—if they lean into meaning over fear.
- Next-Generation Engagement Requires Intentional Development
- Younger family members need more than a job; they need clarity, boundaries, and a connection to purpose.
- The “cousin consortium” stage demands even stronger governance to maintain alignment.
